"They said what they would do, and we did not listen. Then they did what they said they would do."

So ends the first chapter of this brilliantly listenable counterfactual novel, reminding us that America's Christian fundamentalists have been consistently clear about their vision for a "Christian Nation" and dead serious about acquiring the political power to achieve it. When President McCain dies and Sarah Palin becomes president, the listener, along with the nation, stumbles down a terrifyingly credible path toward theocracy, realizing too late that the Christian right meant precisely what it said.

In the spirit of Philip Roth's The Plot Against America, one of America's foremost lawyers lays out in chilling detail what such a future might look like Constitutional protections dismantled; all aspects of life dominated by an authoritarian law called "The Blessing," enforced by a totally integrated digital world known as the "Purity Web." Listeners will find themselves haunted by the questions the narrator struggles to answer in this fictional memoir "What happened, why did it happen, and how could it have happened?"

Fabulous read. The U.S. becoming a theocratic state is in the realm of possibility given the current situation of the religious right wielding such tremendous political power. Who knows if the next idiotic tweet from the presidency may be the catalyst for a world war, nuclear war, religious war, etc. Any such blunder could easily bring on martial law and/or anarchy. Hopefully, if we make it that far, the 2018 mid-term elections will bring the country back to a safer equilibrium! Thanks for the great book that now sits on my shelf between "The Family" (by Jeff Sharlet) and "Fighting God (by David Silverman).

Christian Nation (Audible Audio Edition) Frederic C Rich Oliver Wyman Audible Studios Books Reviews

Granted I'm only eight chapters in, but I am totally and completely hooked. I was up until two this morning reading this book. I might change my review once I finish, but I can't see how this book can fail with such an engaging beginning.
I was referred to this book by TV Tropes, and after I looked at what the synopsis of the story was about, I was intrigued. I mean, as far as speculative fiction goes, I have only read the Left Behind series, which is about the formation of the one-world government by secular forces that are against God, Jesus, the Jews, and the Christians. But there's the other side of the equation to consider Christian fundamentalists who believe not in the Second Coming of Jesus as outlined through Left Behind with the Rapture of the church and the suffering of the saints and the Jews through the Tribulation, but rather in the idea that God has "called" Christians to build His Kingdom here on Earth by installing a "Christian theocratic" government before the Second Coming takes place. This idea has been done before with Margaret Atwood's A Handmaid's Tale, but Christian Nation takes it to the level of almost being like the Left Behind series with the roles reversed.

The story revolves mostly around the main character Greg and his friend Sanjay, whom they have met together in college and have stuck together throughout the events of the story that unfold in this alternate history where John McCain (briefly) becomes President instead of Barack Obama. A third character, Greg's girlfriend Emilie, is there for the first half of the story, but because she's only interested in Greg if he's making lots of money as a lawyer, she eventually leaves him when he decides to switch jobs and join Sanjay's Theocracy Watch. Meanwhile, America becomes a frog being slowly boiled to death as McCain's immediate successor Sarah Palin, and then Steve Jordan, implement changes that are on the surface all about promoting Christian freedoms, but underneath it all subverts everybody's freedom and turns the nation into a dictatorship neatly veiled in spiritualism. The abuses of power that came forth from the Jordan administration, when he enforced the Blessing to be "America's covenant with God" to be accepted by all, leads to a confrontation in Manhattan where Greg and Sanjay stand together with its people to make a final stand in the name of upholding democracy in the face of blind unreasonable authoritarianism.

Reading through this, it saddens me to think there are well-meaning people calling themselves Christians who are, like the antagonists of this story, deluded into thinking that their mission here on Earth isn't the simple preaching of the gospel and making disciples of all nations (as per the Great Commission), but rather the complete and total domination of culture and society. If there were any genuine Christians in this story, they seem to be few and far between compared to the power-hungry people in the public sphere bent on remaking America "in God's image". Most of my sympathy went to the people who, like the Christians in the Left Behind Tribulation scenario, were fighting hard against an oppressive regime that would not be satisfied with anything less than total victory against their perceived "evil".

It's not a bad written story, even though it seems so bogged down in a lot of legalese, which makes sense if only because that's what our main character Greg understands as a lawyer. It just leaves me wanting a bit more to see in this world that was made in this Christian fundamentalist reshaping of society, like seeing how long this new America "under God" will last before cracks start to form in the foundation and the Christians who are in charge of it end up revealing their true selves underneath the flawless "born again" persona. It may be terribly ironic if they were actually forming the type of government that would be fighting everything God had sent His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross for. But for now, I will be content with the main character helping to plant seeds for a future revolution.

Overall, I would recommend this story to anyone who fears what a "Christian theocracy" in the hands of anyone apart from Jesus Christ (the only person I find who is perfectly qualified to run a theocracy, and even does so in the Left Behind book Kingdom Come) would be like, including Christians who are not afraid to see what it would be like in the eyes of those who would have to live under God's law not out of love and reverence, but out of fear and terror of those in power.
A terrifying thought-experiment. The plausibility is what makes it so unnerving.
In our present political atmosphere, this scenario is too scarily believable. Take to heart it's warnings! It has echoes of Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale".
It's scary but I guess that's because some it is no as far fetched as we would like to believe. I think it's an important read for anyone who treasures the freedom of living in the USA and who thinks that hyper religious zealots don't exist here because they do. If they had it their way those of who follow another path would be in a world of hurt. It's a good motivator to vote Democrat that's for sure.

I would add that's much better as an audio book than a e-book or print book. It can be painfully slow to read but is much more interesting in the audio format.
Frederic Rich really nails it in this one. It's a terrifying story of the US where the fundamentalist Christians take over, flush the constitution down the toilet, and we end up with a theocratic country. Everything from book burnings to stoning people to death. The way things have been going, it seems very possible. I even had to put the book down a few times and walk away to remind myself it's just fiction. Very scary. The characters are a little dry but that's ok, the plot kept me interested. Recommended for anyone who values our separation of church and state and our freedom. Read it while it's still legal.
In the astonishing age of Trump's rapid rise to power - this novel, while fiction, describes a not-so-impossible future world where a fundamentalist Christian theocracy takes over the US. It is really scary how much it feels like foreshadowing. This really could happen here. It is so important that I bought three copies to share with friends. It isn't the best writing...I admit, but...the story is well worth it. Please read this book.
